Population Forecasting
Expert demographic forecasting solutions to support decision-making, investment strategies and planning
What is demographic forecasting?
Demographic forecasting involves analysing how populations could change as a result of variations in fertility, mortality and migration, and other external factors, such as housing or employment growth.
Forecasts can be generated for the smallest administrative micro-geographies, to local authority, regional or national boundaries, and even bespoke geographies such as water supply areas or retail catchments.
Scenarios can be generated for variant timescales, providing you with insights to inform planning in the short-, medium- and long-term.
As well as projecting future levels of population, our forecasting models can produce estimate of future households, properties, labour force and employment.
Our forecasting models use tried-and-tested industry-standard ‘cohort component’ methodology across a range of geographies and timescales.
Alongside generating robust trend-based population growth scenarios, we are experts in forecasting the population growth impacts of planned housing or employment growth, enabling you to understand the potential limitations or opportunities associated with these.
As well as offering a bespoke bureau-based forecasting service, we also offer ‘off-the-shelf’ population and property forecasts for England and Wales at Lower Super Output Area (LSOA). You can find out more about these here.

“We really value the support that Edge Analytics provides the Council, not just knowing that the insights provided will stand up to independent review, but with the value-add of support the team provides. They’ve been really helpful in providing the right evidence to us, which has helped shape the strategy for our Local Development Plan and the wider work at the council. This is the second LDP process that we are undertaking with Edge and, I have to say it would have been very difficult to progress this work without the expertise of Edge Analytics.”
